Alexander Ritchie Iona Celtic Art Silver Buckle With Entwined Beasts Sponsor Marked Cf Fs 1903

A stunning piece from Alexander Ritchie Iona Celtic art…..The silver buckle showing entwined snarling beasts is a classic Ritchie design taken from a choir column of the Iona Abbey….Ritchie loved this design so much he had it carved on his top mantle piece within Shuna cottage his home with Euphemia on the Isle of Iona….The cast work is exquisite and the finish is of the highest standard….One of the best pieces of Ritchie silver I have owned….An early piece and fully hallmarked with his silver sponsors hallmark mark of CS*FS and dated 1903…..A full 7 years before Ritchie gained his own registered silver hallmark….The buckle is quite large and of heavy gauge…It could be a belt buckle but I believe it maybe be a specific piece for some kind of Scottish dress….It can be seen in an archive image on page 22 of the Iona book on the right hand side panel dead centre of the display cabinet hanging on the door on plate 1b….
